What is Opus Dei?

flecha_arriba

Opus Dei is a Personal Prelature of the Catholic Church. Its mission is to spread the message that all Christians are called by God to make Jesus Christ known and to seek holiness in and through their daily work, family life, and social relations. To help people carry out this message, Opus Dei offers specialized pastoral care through classes, talks, spiritual direction, retreats, etc. This formation fosters the exercise of human and Christian virtues, and stresses sharing in God's work of creation and redemption by following the example of Christ's hidden life of work. One’s work should be done well for love of God and be seen as a service toward all who are touched by it. Opus Dei's name is Latin for "Work of God."

What does sanctifying one's work means?

flecha_arriba

It means working like Jesus Christ – working hard and well, honestly and fairly, in order to love and serve God and other people. People who do that are making their work holy and helping to sanctify the world from the inside. They are making the Gospel present in all their activities, whether brilliant or humble and hidden. In God’s eyes, what matters is the love people put into their work, not its success in terms of money or fame.

Who belongs to Opus Dei?

flecha_arriba

People of all kinds belong to Opus Dei: priests and lay people, men and women, young and old, married and single, of every occupation and social situation. Most members are married and have families – these are called supernumeraries. Some members (numeraries and associates) make a commitment to celibacy, and so generally have more time and availability to dedicate to the various activities promoted by Opus Dei. Some celibate men are ordained as priests, who make up roughly 2% of the membership. There are currently about 85,000 members of Opus Dei worldwide.

Do members of the Opus Dei make vows?

flecha_arriba

Opus Dei faithful are lay people. For this reason, they do not profess vows because they are not consecrated persons as in the case of members of a religious order. Opus Dei is not a religious order but a personal prelature, a circumscription of the Catholic Church. The priests of the Prelature of Opus Dei are secular priests just like diocesan priests insofar as they live in the world and are governed by their bishop in their pastoral work.

What activities does the Opus Dei organise?

flecha_arriba

Opus Dei provides training, support and guidance (“spiritual formation”) for its members, to help them carry out their mission in the world. It also offers this formation to anyone else wanting to engage their faith at a deeper level. It organises classes, conferences, days of recollection, spiritual direction, etc. aimed at making the Gospel and Church teachings better known and lived. These formational activities are offered separately for women and men. They are planned in such a way that people can combine them with a busy work schedule and family life.

What are the relations between Opus Dei and other Church institutions?

flecha_arriba

The Prelature of Opus Dei and each of its faithful strive to be in full communion with the Pope, the bishops, priests, religious and all ecclesial entities.  The founder of Opus Dei continually repeated that Opus Dei exists exclusively to serve the Church and that the Prelature’s faithful have to be a leaven for unity.
